So we changed our name.....

Last year during SXSW, I ran all over the place handing out fliers to our show. I talked to a lot of people about our band. One day during the festival, as I was walking down the street someone drove by and yelled out their window "Yo, there goes Soy Beans!"

Harder than playing an instrument and writing songs is coming up with a name for your band. We practiced as a group for probably 6 months before we decided on a name. I wanted something that no other band had used, but also something that would be easily recognizable. We chose Soy Bombs after the 1998 Grammy incident where a guy jumped up on stage during Bob Dylan's performance, danced crazily and had 'Soy Bomb' written across his chest. I had come to find out that not very many people watched Bob Dylan's 1998 Grammy performance.

People would ask us, "What are Soy Bombs? Are you guys vegan? Are soy bombs the farts you cut after eating a lot of soy?" And I always explained that it was a reference to the 1998 Grammy incident...and well...it doesn't really mean anything. It's just a cool name.

So after playing a gig at One 2 One bar a while back, we were discussing our past weekends and the word 'Safeword' came up. I instantly thought, If I ever have another band I'm going to call it Safeword. Everyone must have had the same idea because we kept talking about it. Finally during SXSW this year after getting really drunk we voted to change the name. My only reservation was now I have to get a new logo, make all new web sites, get our fans on board....

So, today the change was made. If you own a Soy Bombs' shirt it is now a collectors' item, likely to be worth a lot of money some day.

We're playing a show

Trophy's flyer, originally uploaded by iamcootis.

So things have been a little hectic lately in our personal lives and the EP keeps getting pushed back, so we're deciding to put on another show at Trophy's. This time we'll be playing with our friends Milk Thistle and a newcomer Miss Moonlight.

Lots of exciting things have been happening. We got William Hundley to shoot our EP cover featuring Jessa Peters. They also shot some promo material for us as well. Hopefully we can show you some of that and some outtakes from the photo shoot. Also, Jon bought a video camera so hopefully we'll also be able to post some cool videos when we figure out how to get the sound levels to work on the camera.

And if you missed our last show, we featured 3 new songs: "New Bruises," "Study Abroad," and "Girls Believe Me."

BTW...we're playing a show this coming Wednesday Oct 21st

Trophys, originally uploaded by iamcootis.

So we've got this show booked at Trophy's for Wednesday, Oct 21st. We'll be hitting the stage first at 9:00, followed by Radio Fallout and then Milk Thistle.

After this show we're planning on taking a small break to begin work on the EP. We're tentatively planning to begin the recording process on the 25th. We'll keep this updated and hopefully shoot some video of the recording process.

On another note, I have two more song ideas making their way to fruition. So, in a month or two (most likely two or three) look forward to "New Bruises" and "Studying Abroad."

We're playing the Parlor

picking songs for our EP

So.... we decided to invite some friends over to listen to our rehearsal and help us pick out which songs we would record on our EP. I know, I know... a brilliant plan. Anyway, after not burning down the backyard cooking for everyone it was time to come inside and melt people's faces off.

the results:
When we decided to record an EP we knew that "Google" and "The Hot/Crazy Ratio" would be on it. We needed to pick out two more songs. Every time we thought we had one picked out the following would take place:
(We play a song)
person 1 - Sounds great!!
person 2 - I didn't like it
person 3 - It was ok.

I don't think we had a single song that everyone agreed upon. So.... we have pretty much no idea what we're going to record on the EP at this point. THEREFORE - Come to the next show and give us a hand. Once you have retrieved your melted off face from the floor. Try to remember what songs you liked and let us know and we'll probably record them on our EP.
